and Export Your GEDCOM File
GEDCOM is the acronym for "GE"nealogical "D"ata
"COM"munication. It provides a standard, uniform
format for sharing family information between different
genealogical database programs. All genealogy software today
can export and import GEDCOM files, so it has become the
universal format for storing family history files. Creating
a GEDCOM file is easy and basic instructions are provided
below.
Prepare
Your GEDCOM FileA properly prepared GEDCOM
file is critical to producing an Ancestry Circle that you
will be proud of. The Ancestry Circle chart relies on your
GEDCOM file for all of its information, so it's important
that you prepare your family history data so that the names
and links are exactly as you'd like them. The chart will
display the names and relationships exactly as they appear
in your GEDCOM file. To ensure that your chart comes out
right, please check the spelling, capitalization, and the
links prior to sending your GEDCOM file. When you send your
GEDCOM file, please let us know the name of the person (or
people) you'd like to appear in the center of the chart.
Also, to be sure that we use the right person, please let
us know the person's date of birth or record ID number.
Note:
For a fee of $50.00 per hour, charged in 15 minute increments,
we can do the following for you:
- Merge
multiple GEDCOM files into a single GEDCOM file
- Fix
capitalization of names
- Remove
unwanted titles, prefixes, suffixes, etc.
- Troubleshoot
problems with your GEDCOM file
Although
the process of outputting a GEDCOM file is very simple,
many people find that allowing us to perform these tasks
for them not only saves them time and headache, but ensures
a perfectly output Ancestry Circle.

you with your specific needs.
Export
Your GEDCOM FileExporting your GEDCOM file
is a very simple process no matter what software program
you are using to assist you with your genealogy. FIRST,
make
sure you have properly prepared your GEDCOM file by double-checking
all spelling, capitalization, and links. SECOND,
on
your menu bar, select File >> Export and save the
file to your hard drive as a GEDCOM file. To keep the file
size small enough to email to us, make sure that you don't
include any notes or media in your saved GEDCOM file. Our
preferred Char Set for the GEDCOM file is UTF-8.
FinallySend
Your GEDCOM File Via Email
After
ordering your Ancestry Circle you will receive a confirmation
email from Ancestry Circle providing the details of your
product order. After receiving that email (usually within
minutes of placing your order), all you have to do is click
the "Reply" button in your email program,
"Attach" your properly prepared GEDCOM
file to the email, type in the body of the email the names(s)
and birthdate(s) of the person(s) you want to see in the
center of the chart, and click "Send."
We take care of the rest and in a matter of a few days,
you'll receive your completed Ancestry Circle in the mail.
